Our story

How Tesserae came to be

Tesserae started from a straightforward observation: many Malaysian businesses know their operations could work better, but the path from "we have a problem" to "we've actually fixed it" is rarely clear. Teams get busy. Consultants arrive with frameworks and leave behind slide decks. The improvement doesn't stick.

Our founder spent years working in operations and improvement roles across manufacturing and service businesses in the Klang Valley before setting up Tesserae in Shah Alam. The aim was simple — to offer the kind of hands-on, practical improvement work that actually stays in the business after the engagement ends.

The name Tesserae refers to the small tiles that make up a mosaic — individually modest, collectively forming something coherent and durable. That's how we think about process improvement: small, careful changes that fit together into something that holds.

Our mission

What we are here to do

Our work is to help teams understand their processes more clearly and make them work better — not through upheaval, but through observation, small tests and thoughtful change. We believe improvement is most durable when the people closest to the work are involved in designing it.

Observe before advising

We spend time understanding the actual work before making any suggestions. Recommendations grounded in observation tend to be more useful than those built from theory alone.

Build capability, not dependence

We want your team to be able to continue improving after we have finished. That means sharing the thinking as we work, not just presenting conclusions at the end.

Scope things sensibly

Each engagement is bounded — we agree in advance what is included, how long it runs and what you will receive. We do not expand the scope without your explicit agreement.

The people

Our small, experienced team

We keep our team compact so every client engagement receives senior-level attention throughout.

FA

Faridah Azman

Founder & Principal Consultant

Faridah has spent fifteen years in operations and process improvement across manufacturing and professional services in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. She set up Tesserae to offer practical, affordable lean advisory work to firms that don't have internal improvement specialists.

ZR

Zulkifli Rahman

Process Analyst

Zulkifli supports clients through the observation and measurement stages of each engagement. His background is in industrial engineering and he brings a methodical, detail-oriented approach to mapping process flows and identifying where effort is absorbed without adding value.

NH

Nurul Hasliza

Coaching & Engagement Lead

Nurul leads the coaching work in our longer engagements, helping teams develop the confidence and habits to sustain improvement after Tesserae's involvement ends. She has a background in adult learning and has worked with teams across logistics, retail and administrative operations.

How we work

Standards we hold ourselves to

Our work is guided by principles rather than a fixed methodology. These are the commitments clients can rely on in every engagement.

Documented scope, agreed in advance

Before any work begins, we put the scope, timeline and deliverables in writing. We do not add to the scope without a fresh conversation and your agreement.

Client confidentiality

Everything we observe and document in your organisation stays private. We do not discuss client situations, process details or commercial information with third parties.

Honest assessment, even when inconvenient

If our observations suggest a different problem from the one initially described, we say so plainly. Our goal is to be useful, not to confirm what you hoped to hear.

Iterative, tested improvements

We do not recommend sweeping changes. We suggest small, testable adjustments, observe the results and refine from there. This is how durable improvement happens.

Active knowledge transfer

We explain our thinking as we work. By the time an engagement closes, your team should understand not just what changed, but why — and how to continue from there.

Culturally aware engagement

We work in a Malaysian business context and understand how teams, hierarchies and communication norms operate locally. Our approach fits the actual environment, not a textbook ideal.

Our expertise

Lean thinking, applied to Malaysian operations

Process improvement is a well-established discipline, but the way it gets applied matters enormously. Lean thinking developed in manufacturing environments where waste — unnecessary movement, waiting, overproduction, rework — was visible and measurable. The principles translate to service and administrative work, but the translation requires judgement about what actually applies.

At Tesserae, we focus on the handful of lean concepts that consistently produce useful results in the Malaysian small and mid-size business context: value-stream mapping as a conversation tool, simple pull-based workflow to reduce queuing, and short review cycles to catch problems early. We do not import a full methodology and ask clients to adapt to it. We observe the work, identify the primary sources of wasted effort and suggest targeted adjustments.

Our client base is varied — we have worked with logistics coordinators trying to reduce document handling time, administrative teams wanting to standardise how requests are received and processed, and production supervisors seeking to cut changeover time between jobs. The common thread is a team that wants to work more smoothly without a major restructuring programme.

The Klang Valley and Selangor have a dense, varied business ecosystem — manufacturing, logistics, professional services and shared service operations all sit within a short distance. Tesserae's location in Shah Alam puts us close to the industrial corridors of the region, and we are comfortable working across this mix of business types and scales.
